Após o australiano Joel Parkinson bater na trave por quatro vezes, conquistando os vice-campeonatos de 2001, 2004, 2009 e 2011, Parkinson conseguiu se firmar como campeão mundial. A confirmação do título veio nesta sexta-feira, ainda na semifinal do Pipe Masters, última etapa do circuito mundial de surf 2012. O australiano levou o caneco ao se classificar para a final e ver o norte-americano Kelly Slater, 11 vezes campeão mundial, ser eliminado na semifinal e ficar impossibilitado de alcançar Parkinson.
